This Saturday evening, on the pitch at Burnley, north of Manchester, the Citizen completed the first part of the path to the English title. A goal from Erling Haaland in the fifth minute, and the victory took shape quietly (0-1). Three additional points in the standings, and a perfect tie with the direct competitor, Arsenal (70 points).

Five criteria to decide between the two teams

However, the Premier League regulations have everything planned for this type of case. Five criteria separate two tied leaders, particularly if this is the case after 38 days of the championship. First of all, there is the best goal difference (Mancherster City and Arsenal are tied, +37)then the best attack is rewarded (66 goals for City, 63 for Arsenal). The third criterion lies on the points taken during direct confrontations (4 for City, 1 for Arsenal)before away goals in these matches come into account (1 each).

Finally, and this has never happened in the history of the English championship, if the first four criteria have not decided between the two teams, a play-off match takes place on neutral ground. Manchester City and Arsenal will not get there and this historic point will not happen this season. Whatever happens, Pep Guardiola’s men have the advantage in the direct confrontation thanks to a victory at the Etihad Stadium (2-1) and a draw at the Emirates Stadium (1-1).

The Premier League still has five days before delivering its verdict and appointing its champion. Still in contention in the Champions League (facing Atlético Madrid in the semi-final), Arsenal host Newcastle this Saturday, then Fulham, before a trip to West Ham, the arrival of Burnley and the trip to Crystal Palace to finish. On the other side, Manchester City, which only has the championship and the FA Cup (semi-final against Southampton on Saturday), will go to Everton, Bournemouth, and receive Brentford, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa to finish.

The title of champion of England will be decided between Arsenal and Manchester City. Five days, for immense happiness. Either the Londoners find a trophy lost since 2004, or the Citizen regain their due just one year after having left it to Liverpool.

Thanks to its victory at Burnley (0-1), this Wednesday evening, Manchester City took back the throne of the Premier League from Arsenal, just four days before the end of the championship.
