Viktor Gyokeres says the pitch at the Emirates being “a bit dry” did not help Arsenal in their 2-1 loss against Bournemouth on Saturday.

The Sweden international scored his side’s only goal to equalise after Eli Junior Kroupi put the visitors ahead in the 17th minute but Alex Scott’s 74th minute strike ensured they couldn’t extend their lead at the top of the table.

Arsenal remain only nine points ahead of Manchester City, who have two games in hand.

“We had some ok chances in the end,” Gyokeres said after the match to the BBC. “(The) pitch was maybe a bit dry there to be honest so that didn’t help, but of course we all need to do better need to take our chances.”

Mikel Arteta said the defeat that his side “did a lot of strange things”. “Very disappointing obviously, it’s a big punch in the face, and it’s about how we react now,” Arsenal’s manager told TNT Sports after the match.

Arsenal have lost three of their last four games in all competitions. Gyokeres, 27, echoed Arteta’s reaction about the week ahead, in which they face City at the Etihad next Sunday.

When asked after the match whether he was confident Arsenal could turn their form around, he said: “Yeah very confident we don’t need to get stuck too much on what happened today and think positive and look forward to the games.”
