The clash of the 33rd day in the Premier League between the leader, Arsenal, and its runner-up, Manchester City, looked like a final before its time, Sunday April 19. Engaged in a long-distance fight for the title for several weeks, thanks to a renewed form of Pep Guardiola’s men and a palpable wear and tear of those of Mikel Arteta, the two teams had marked this meeting to mark their territory. And in their garden at the Etihad Stadium, the Cityzens managed to win (2-1) to reignite the suspense in this final stretch of the season in England.
Author of a superb number in the Gunners’ box, Frenchman Rayan Cherki was the first to shine by opening the scoring after a quarter of an hour of play (1-0, 16th). But in the process, a huge recovery error from former Parisian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma allowed Kai Havertz to equalize (1-1, 18th).
Returning from the locker room, heated situations multiplied on both sides, with both teams finding the posts. And while Arsenal pushed to take the advantage, it was ultimately City who took the lead thanks to Erling Haaland (2-1, 65th).
With this very important success, Manchester City returns to three lengths behind the Gunners in the standings, with a late match to play (against Crystal Palace, the date has yet to be determined). Enough to completely reshuffle the cards at the end of the 2025-2026 financial year. The pressure will be strong until the end on the London club, which is fighting to win its first English championship title since 2004 and is, at the same time, still in the running in the Champions League where it will challenge Atlético de Madrid in the semi-finals (April 29 and May 5).
