OL Lyonnes overthrown by Arsenal in the semi-final first leg

OL Lyonnes is scuttled. This Sunday, April 26, the leader of the Arkema Premier League was traveling to London to challenge Arsenal in the semi-final first leg of the Women’s Champions League. A year after having already crossed swords with the English at the same stage of the competition (2-1; 1-4), the Fenottes seemed to take things in hand at the Emirates Stadium. After a ball recovered high by a teammate, the German Jule Brand interfered in the opposing defense before finishing strongly in the net (17th, 0-1).

In control on the scoreboard, the partners of captain Wendie Renard then turned their backs to resist the Gunners’ offensives. Solid until then, the Lyonnes ended up cracking with a gag goal. On a free kick played low by Caldentey, Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler made an incomprehensible hole. A hand fault which allowed Arsenal to equalize (58th).

Very close to regaining the advantage on a strike from Kadidiatou Diani on the crossbar (66th), OL Lyonnes scuttled themselves again by conceding a second gag goal: following a misunderstanding between Engen and Endler, Smith emerged to take advantage of the error and double the lead in front of the empty goal (83rd, 2-1).

With their backs against the wall, Lyon will have to be impeccable next Saturday (3 p.m.) at Groupama Stadium to turn things around and qualify for the final in Oslo on May 23. In the other semi-final first leg, Bayern Munich managed to hold FC Barcelona in check (1-1).
