Tuesday evening, the Champions League semi-final first leg between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich promises to be a real final before its time. For this meeting at the summit of European football, UEFA has appointed a referee that the French know well. This is Sandro Schärer, a 37-year-old Swiss-German with solid experience on the European scene. However, this will be his first match in the last four of C1.
It was he who officiated during PSG’s victory against Atalanta this season in the single group stage (4-0 victory for the French). In 2021/22, Sandro Shärer refereed the match between Brugge and PSG (1-1), still in the same competition. Last year, he was on the whistle for Bayern-Inter (1-2) and in 2020/21, he refereed Bayern-Lokomotiv Moscow 2-0 (20/21).
Strongly criticized by Olivier Létang
Last season, during the Champions League round of 16 second leg between Lille and Borussia Dortmund, President Olivier Létang, president of LOSC, deplored a “lack of impartiality” because the referee spoke in German with the BVB players. In the Europa League, he also made controversial decisions with French clubs.
He was also on the whistle during the Blues’ defeat against Italy in the Nations League (1-3) in September 2024. In three matches refereed in the Champions League this season, he sent 11 yellow cards, including 7 during Sporting Portugal-Bodo Glimt (3.67 average).
