First in Europe, Brighton will build a 10,000-seat stadium dedicated to its women’s section

A major breakthrough in women’s football. The Brighton club announced this Tuesday that it was building a 10,000-seat stadium dedicated entirely to the matches of its women’s team. The Seagulls hope to inaugurate the enclosure “no later than the 2030-2031 season”, subject to the necessary planning permissions, it is specified. It will be built right next to the men’s stadium, Amex Stadium, and even connected to it by a footbridge.

This is a rarity, even a novelty in Europe. This new arena will be the “first purpose-built stadium for a women’s team in the UK and Europe”, and “one of only three stadiums of its type in the world”, according to a club press release. In the United States, the Kansas City Current has played in CPKC Stadium since 2024. The new American franchise Denver Summit also hopes to take possession of a new stadium in 2028.

Fran Kirby and her teammates at Brighton, currently sixth in the English championship (out of twelve teams), play most of their matches at Broadfield Stadium in Crawley, a town located around thirty kilometers from Brighton. Several women’s sections have gradually migrated to the men’s stadiums, such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa.
