It was supposed to be a huge party at the RCDE Stadium, the usual home of Espanyol Barcelona. The Spanish selection returned to Catalonia to play a friendly match against Egypt on Tuesday evening, in preparation for the World Cup. But the match, which ended in a forgettable 0-0, was above all marked by Islamophobic chants which resonated in the stadium.
According to the Spanish media, the chant “he who does not jump is Muslim” was taken up, twice, by many supporters, who have surely forgotten that the best player of La Roja, Lamine Yamal is of Muslim faith. Before that, the Egyptian anthem was also whistled by some Spanish fans.
“Spain has a problem with racism”
These Islamophobic chants provoked the anger and shame of many Spanish media who broadcast the meeting. In the program “Tiempos de Juego” on Cadena Cope, commentators judged these chants “lamentable, unacceptable” and even asked that the meeting be stopped.
On Cadena Ser, in the program “Carrusel”, Dani Garrido assured that “Spain had a problem with racism. And this country wants to host a World Cup in 2030.” It is not Vinicius who will say the opposite.
