While contemporaries like Frank Lampard quickly rose to top positions, Cole insisted he deliberately chose to lay the foundations needed to be fully prepared for the pressure inherent in being a manager. He cited the likes of Thierry Henry and Carlo Ancelotti as inspirations, but remained determined to forge his own identity rather than simply emulating the coaches who came before him.
Aware of his long-term ambitions and determined to make his mark through work rather than reputation, he explained: “Frank Lampard was so good – he was already way further along than I was after he retired. I’m often compared to Frank and people ask me why I didn’t get a job. I wasn’t ready. It’s quite simple. I tried to lay the foundation and make sure I was ready for this opportunity. »
I will not become a José Mourinho – I have neither the stature nor the respect, because I have won nothing. Carlo Ancelotti is cool and calm, and he’s a successful player and coach, so I can’t be him. I can’t be a Rafa Benítez. I take a little inspiration from them, but I stay myself, I trust my method and I focus on Cesena. I want to work and hopefully win a trophy one day. »
