UK broadcaster Sky Sports was forced to apologise after Erling Haaland called Bernardo Silva ‘f—ing Cannavaro’ following Manchester City’s 2-1 win against Arsenal.
The pair were interviewed after the match, with Haaland having scored the winning goal and Bernardo winning Sky’s player of the match award.
It was an all-action performance from the Portuguese midfielder, who is leaving City at the end of the season, and one moment from the victory at the Etihad Stadium was picked out. Late in the game, the 5ft 8in (173cm) Silva rose highest in the penalty area to head clear a dangerous delivery, which drew high praise from Haaland.
“I remember that cross I told him after when he headed it out (against Viktor Gyokeres) I just told him, you were like f—ing Cannavaro,” said the Norwegian, referencing the legendary World Cup-winning Italian centre-back Fabio Cannavaro, who won the Ballon d’Or in 2006.
Haaland was then reminded about his language by Sky Sports interviewer Patrick Davidson, then saying: “Come on, we’ve all been swearing in our lives. I just told him he was like Cannavaro so today Bernie I’m not going to make you emotional here but you were really good as usual.”
