Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes is set to be called up to the England squad as a replacement for the injured Eberechi Eze.
Eze, 27, was absent from Arsenal’s line-up for the Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City on Sunday with a calf injury, and has now withdrawn from Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
Barnes, 28, would earn his second senior call-up six years after his first. He was last in an England squad in October 2020, when he won his only cap in a friendly against Wales.
Scotland have recently tried to persuade Barnes to switch international allegiance before the World Cup, as the Newcastle winger is eligible via his grandparents.
Barnes declined that approach and is set to be part of Tuchel’s squad for the forthcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, though it is not yet official.
Arsenal, meanwhile, say Eze will undergo another scan on the calf injury he acquired against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday.
“We have to do another scan in six or seven days and wait and see the results,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told a press conference after Sunday’s final.
England face Uruguay on March 27 and Japan on March 31, with both games at Wembley Stadium.
