On Saturday, Arsenal had an excellent operation in the race for the Premier League title. At home, the Gunners won 1-0 against Newcastle United thanks to a goal scored in the first minutes. Mikel Arteta’s team is now three points ahead of Manchester City, who have qualified for the FA Cup final and have a game in hand.
The Magpies approached the match without complexes and even conceded two chances in the first quarter of an hour. Despite this promising start, they gave in in the tenth minute: served at the edge of the area, Eberechi Eze fired a powerful shot which ended up in Nick Pope’s left corner.
The Gunners then managed the end of the first period without too much trouble, even if David Raya had to work to repel a shot from Sandro Tonali. The reigning champion, however, suffered a hard blow: Kai Havertz, injured, gave way to Viktor Gyökeres. At half-time, Arsenal led 1-0, but the game remained open.
Shortly after the restart, a new blow hit the Gunners: Eze, author of the opening score, gave way to Gabriel Martinelli. Nervousness then spreads to the stands, because this one-goal lead does not yet secure the title.
The tension rises when Nick Pope, coming off his line, completely misses the ball and mows down Gyökeres just at the edge of the area; However, the referee is satisfied with a yellow card. Shortly after, the great Nick Woltemade made his debut for the Magpies. The German immediately serves Yoane Wissa, whose shot, from close range, goes over the bar.
Amid cheers, Bukayo Saka came on in added time. Arsenal shook during the seven long minutes of stoppage time. The relief was therefore palpable in north London when the final whistle blew.
