Arsenal won this Saturday against Newcastle (1-0), temporarily regaining a three-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
After two consecutive defeats in the league, Arsenal’s lead over Manchester City melted like snow in the sun. Outpaced by Manchester City in the number of goals scored, the Gunners reacted this Saturday by winning at home against Newcastle (1-0, 34th day of the Premier League). Enough to temporarily recover three points ahead of the Skyblues.
While Manchester City qualified for the FA Cup final at the same time thanks to a stunning success against Southampton (2-1), Arsenal knew they had no room for error. Opposed to the freewheeling Magpies at the end of the season, the Londoners quickly opened the score thanks to Eberechi Eze (1-0, 9th). Enough to open the door to a shower of goals? Well no.
As they do under the leadership of Mikel Arteta, the Gunners did not block the goals and were satisfied with this very small advantage to win. With a black spot all the same; the exit due to injury of Kai Havertz, decisive passer on the goal and replaced in the 34th minute by Viktor Gyökeres.
Arsenal turns to Atlético
The scorer will also leave prematurely in the 53rd, visibly affected, but Arsenal will therefore win. This small victory is in any case positive from the point of view of confidence for the Londoners who will now turn to their next match: the semi-final first leg of the Champions League on April 29 against Atlético de Madrid.
A trip to Spain which promises to be tough, between two teams far from being the most spectacular in the game this season. It remains to be seen what state Mikel Arteta’s troops will be in, and whether the injured will return in time. In the meantime, Arsenal are top of the Premier League.
