OFFICIAL: Atlético de Madrid referee

After eliminating FC Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, Atlético de Madrid are tackling a new challenge, with the reception of Arsenal this Wednesday.

Can Arsenal clinch a Champions League final? While the Gunners have said goodbye to their dreams of a quadruple this season, with their premature elimination in the FA Cup and their defeat in the League Cup final against Manchester City, the C1 could well represent their last hope of a title this season.

Last week, Mikel Arteta’s players lost against Manchester City in the Premier League (1-2) and this defeat compromised their chances of winning the league title. This double European confrontation against Atlético de Madrid is therefore of particular importance for the Gunners. Before the clash, UEFA confirmed the identity of the referee who would blow the whistle for the first leg. This will be Mr Danny Makkelie (Netherlands).

Arsenal already winning once this season with Mr Makkelie

The Dutchman, who has already refereed seven Champions League matches this season, has already been on the whistle for an Arsenal match. It was the success acquired against Bayer Leverkusen (2-0), in the round of 16 second leg.

In all, Mr. Makkelie has already refereed seven Atlético de Madrid matches, for a record of three wins, three draws and one defeat. This came against a Premier League club, Liverpool in 2021 (0-2). As for Arsenal, the record is three wins and one defeat in four matches. The defeat occurred in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Champions League, against Bayern Munich (0-1).
