There are transfer files that slowly, almost silently, get carried away before becoming impossible to ignore. That of Djaoui Cissé is the perfect example.
At 22 years old, the Franco-Malian midfielder from Stade Rennais has gone from promising status to that of a concrete target of the biggest European clubs in just a few months. And now, Arsenal is in the dance. For Rennes, the pressure goes up a notch.
An environment that has everything to please adults
Trained at Stade Rennais since 2019, Djaoui Cissé has reached a decisive milestone this season. In 2025-2026, he played around 22 matches in Ligue 1, including a dozen starts – significant playing time for a player of his age in a demanding championship. His profile appeals: box-to-box of 1.88 m, capable of breaking the opposing pressure, protecting the ball under pressure and throwing sharp vertical passes. Some observers evoke a flattering comparison with Javier Pastore – same technical elegance, same intelligence in reading the game. For European recruiters, the “modern profile” box is checked.
The Gunners enter the scene
If Bayer Leverkusen was the first to draw – with an official offer of around 20 million euros, according to several media – it is the entry of Arsenal into the file which reshuffles the cards. Mikel Arteta, fond of technical, physical and young midfielders, would have targeted Rennais to strengthen the Gunners’ axis. Its profile combining recovery, clean recovery and protection of space corresponds precisely to the criteria sought in the Premier League. For the moment, the London club has not made an official offer: it is in the advanced monitoring phase. But in such a competitive issue, the shift can happen very quickly.
Because the competition is real. Leeds, Aston Villa, Newcastle and Eintracht Frankfurt are also mentioned among the suitors. A transfer window with several bidders which mechanically puts Rennes in a position of strength on price – but also under increasing pressure to manage requests without disrupting the group.
Rennes between financial windfall and sporting dilemma
Stade Rennais has solid assets in this negotiation. Cissé is under contract until 2026 after a recent extension, which offers the Breton club comfortable room for maneuver. At 20 million euros – and even more if Arsenal or another English club seriously aligns – this departure would represent a remarkable return on investment for a player trained internally.
But the equation is not entirely favorable. The player, whose playing time sometimes remains inconsistent under Franck Haise, would begin to question his future in Rennes. Some media describe a file “ready for a showdown”: if an offer deemed acceptable lands on the Rennes desk and the player does not feel structured in the project, the door could open.
Summer 2026, a structuring decision
Selling Djaoui Cissé for 20 million or more means financing several recruitments, strengthening an often requested cash flow and confirming the Rennes model – that of a training club which sells high to Europe. But it also means taking the risk of parting with a 22-year-old midfielder who could potentially provide structure for several seasons.
Arsenal is not waiting. And when the Gunners are interested in a player, the tempo of the file no longer really belongs to them. Rennes knows it. The summer of 2026 already promises to be decisive.
