While Atlético hosts Arsenal on Wednesday (9 p.m.) in the Champions League semi-final first leg, Diego Simeone was asked about the future of Julian Alvarez, courted by several major European clubs including PSG. A situation which does not surprise the Colchoneros coach.
This is a statement that should reignite the rumors. While he is under contract with Atlético de Madrid until 2030, Julian Alvarez is being courted by many major European clubs. But for the moment, the Argentinian world champion in 2022 hits the nail on the head when asked about his future. “I cannot continue to express myself all the time to clarify or deny things. I do not attach importance to what is said on social networks because it takes on enormous proportions, so I concentrate on what I can do on the ground. There is something that comes out every week,” he told the media on Monday.
This Tuesday, on the eve of the clash between the Colchoneros and Arsenal in the semi-final of the Champions League, Diego Simeone was in turn questioned about the future of his prolific striker (19 goals including 9 in C1 this season and 9 assists). “I’m not in Julian Alvarez’s head,” the technician first responded at a press conference. And continued: “I consider it normal that such an incredible player is coveted by Arsenal, PSG or Barça. It’s normal!”
Barça rather than PSG or Arsenal?
Arriving in Madrid in 2024 from Manchester City, the player himself confirmed last November that PSG had expressed interest. “It’s true, there were discussions between the leaders of PSG and my agent, they showed an interest in recruiting me, but it didn’t happen,” he confided in an interview with France Football.
In addition to PSG, Barça would have made the 25-year-old striker their priority to become Robert Lewandowski’s successor. This Tuesday, El Chiringuito assured that the Argentinian would have informed Atlético de Madrid (who should fight to retain him) of his wish to join the Catalan club next summer. Another club in the race: Arsenal. The Telegraph reported this Tuesday that the English club, already interested last year, still has it in its sights for the next summer transfer window.
In the meantime, it is against the Gunners that Julian Alvarez and his Atlético teammates are preparing to play one of the most important matches of their season. Fourth in Liga and beaten by Real Sociedad in the final of the Copa del Rey on April 18 (2-2, 3-4 tab) during which the Argentinian equalized and sent the two teams to overtime, the Colchoneros have one last opportunity to win a title this season. To do this, they will first have to get rid of Arsenal, with the first leg scheduled for this Wednesday at the Metropolitano (9 p.m.) then the return on Tuesday May 5 (9 p.m.) at the Emirates Stadium, before a possible final in Budapest on May 30 against PSG or Bayern.
