Arsenal will not travel to Wembley. Mikel Arteta’s team suffered a crushing defeat on Saturday night at Southampton, who are currently playing in the English second division. The club from the south of England qualifies for the semi-finals of the competition.
On the Arsenal side, several big stars remained on the bench, while other big names still took the kick-off. Gabriel, Martin Ødegaard and Gabriel Martinelli were notably among the starters.
After 35 minutes, Southampton took the home lead. Ben White misjudged a cross, allowing Ross Stewart to control the ball and score: 1-0.
After the break, Arteta brought on Viktor Gyökeres. The Swede, who is currently in great form, only needed eight minutes to equalize.
Shortly after, fate struck Arsenal. Gabriel was injured and had to leave the field in pain. William Saliba replaced him.
Deprived of Gabriel, Arsenal collapsed ingloriously in the final minutes. Tom Fellows served Shea Charles at the edge of the area, who beat Kepa with a powerful strike: 2-1.
