The legs are starting to shake… Beaten in the League Cup final by Manchester City before the break, Arsenal missed another chance to lift a trophy by stumbling on the lawn of Southampton, seventh in the Championship, in the quarter-finals of the Cup (2-1). The bad evening of Gunners started with the backheel missed by Martin Ødegaard on the edge of the opposing area: the Saints moved up the field, Ben White misread James Bree’s cross and Ross Stewart took the opportunity to control and shoot Kepa Arrizabalaga (1-0, 35e).
Entering the hour mark, Viktor Gyökeres needed only eight minutes to equalize, following the momentum of his international break (1-1, 68e). Shea Charles, however, ignited the St Mary’s Stadium by restoring the advantage to the locals with the help of the post (2-1, 85e). Arsenal will not return, and miss the opportunity to return to Wembley. The final quarter will pit West Ham against Leeds on Sunday to see who will complete the final four, with Manchester City, Chelsea and Southampton.
