The Premier League’s Match Center account released a statement on X to explain why the decision was upheld after viewing the video. According to the league, the position of Christie’s arm was decisive: judged high and away from the body, it resulted in contact with the ball meeting the criteria for a hand fault.

“The referee’s decision to award a penalty for a handball was verified and confirmed by VAR, who judged that Christie’s arm was away from his body,” the statement said.
