The Wemby generation will be entitled to their World Cup at home. France has been designated host country for the competition in 2031, the International Federation (Fiba) announced this Wednesday in a press release. The competition will take place in Lille, Lyon and Paris from August 29 to September 14, with a final phase taking place in the capital.
Japan, for its part, was chosen to host the Women’s World Cup in 2030. Fiba underlined in its press release the importance of the two countries as “leading organizers of international events”, such as the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.
Hosting the World Cup is a great first for France. Jean-Pierre Huckler, the president of the Federation, opened the door a few months ago. “There has never been a Basketball World Cup in France. There are quite a few things that line up. We are coming out of the Olympics which were euphoric, basketball ticket sales represented 10% of the total ticket sales, with 1.1 million spectators, it is pharaonic,” declared the manager.
