Former rugby legend Serge Blanco succeeded in his bid to enter politics by winning the municipal elections on Sunday in Biarritz, his hometown, with 41.92% of the votes in the second round in a triangular election. For his first electoral campaign, the former back of the XV of France and Olympic Biarritz is ahead of Maider Arosteguy (32.21%) and a union list of the left and a centrist candidate, led by Ana Ezcurra, third with 25.87%, according to complete results.
The former star player, who was ahead of the outgoing mayor LR by only twelve votes in the first round, was rallied between the two rounds by a member of the outgoing opposition, Jean-Baptiste Dussaussois-Larralde, who came fourth (13.11%). After announcing the results to the cheers and applause of Serge Blanco’s supporters, Maider Arosteguy expressed his “disappointment” and his “feeling of having given everything”, before predicting “an extremely difficult mandate”.
