OL loses in Germany, Arsenal wins the derby against Chelsea

Quarter-finals that started strong! This Tuesday, March 24, the first two matches of the first phase of the Women’s Champions League were actually contested. On this occasion, the last representative of French football, OL Lyonnes, traveled to Germany to face Wolfsburg. Later in the evening, Arsenal hosted Chelsea for an electric London derby.

OL Lyonnes surprised, Arsenal wins the derby

A result as unexpected as it is frustrating. OL Lyonnes actually lost by the smallest of margins, one goal to zero, following a deflected shot from Lineth Beerensteyn (14th) at the start of the match. A first defeat in the seven direct confrontations between the two big names in European football for the Fenottes, who will have to turn things around next Thursday in the return match. The French women have not lost a single match so far this season, in all competitions.

The London derby, for its part, turned in favor of Arsenal. The Gunners won by a score of three goals to one against their rivals. Stina Blackstenius opened the scoring in the 23rd minute of play, before being imitated by Chloe Kelly after half an hour of play. Trailing by two goals, Chelsea managed to reduce the gap in the 65th minute of play by Lauren James. What to restart the game? No way. About ten minutes later, Alessia Russo gave the locals a two-goal lead, who will have to maintain their lead next Wednesday during the return leg.

  • Wolfsburg 1 – 0 OL Lyonnes
