Relief for the Lionesses: Leah Williamson has been selected in the England squad to face Spain, while Sarina Wiegman can also count on Beth Mead returning from injury

Asked if Williamson would be fit for the Spain match, Wiegman replied: “That’s what we expect. She has had a few small setbacks, but overall she is doing very well. When she plays, she really performs well. We have been careful with her, as have Arsenal, and above all, she is very keen on it herself. I think she will be ready and that is why we selected her. She is in good shape and she is progressing. The little problem she had isn’t serious, but it just takes a little time. »

The return of the Lionesses captain is not the only good news from Wiegman’s latest selection, unveiled on Tuesday morning, as Beth Mead, Williamson’s teammate at Arsenal, also returns after missing March training due to a shin problem. It’s a particularly welcome boost given the absences England face in attack.

Ella Toone, the Manchester United playmaker who also missed the March period, remains sidelined with a hip problem, while Aggie Beever-Jones, the Chelsea striker, and Grace Clinton, the Manchester City midfielder, are also out of next month’s matches against Spain and Iceland. Beever-Jones is suffering from an ankle problem which has forced her to miss Chelsea’s last two games, while Clinton has not played for club or country for almost six weeks.

Michelle Agyemang, the young striker who distinguished herself at the European Championship last summer, is out for a long period in attack after suffering a serious ACL injury during England’s match against Australia last October. Missy Bo Kearns will not be there either. Kearns was absent for good reasons during the last training session, after announcing that she was expecting her first child. However, this weekend the Aston Villa midfielder revealed the devastating news that she had lost her baby.
