He’s not necessarily the man we expected first on the finish line in Waregem but Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers), impressive in the last kilometers, won the 80th edition of Across Flanders on Wednesday. The Italian was 14 seconds behind Wout van Aert (Visma Lease a Bike) but the Belgian collapsed 100 meters from the finish, unable to follow the infernal pace of the Transalpine sprint.
The latter succeeds the American Neilson Powless and wins his first one-day race, after 184.6 kilometers of effort, notably on the famous cobblestones.
Wout van Aert goes close to the goal again
In the finale of A Travers la Flanders, the Belgian left alone after a well-placed attack 30 kilometers from the finish. But his lead melted like snow in the sun in the last three kilometers. Vermeersch went out with Ganna but only the Italian was able to make the last effort towards victory. Soren Waerenskjold (UNO X-Mobility) completes the podium behind Ganna and van Aert.
The first Frenchman, Christophe Laporte, is 7th.
