Tiger Woods told police he was on the phone ‘with the president’ before his arrest

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office in Florida released on Thursday the footage filmed by the on-board cameras of police officers who arrested Tiger Woods after his car accident. The video shows the police arriving at the scene of the crash, which occurred on March 27, where the golf legend hit a truck before ending up, without injury, with the car on its side.

“I’m going to ask you to stay here with us,” an officer said. “Yes, I was on the phone with the president,” replies Woods, already out of his vehicle, who then appears surprised by his arrest for “driving under the influence”, to which he pleaded not guilty on Tuesday.

“Very close friend” of Donald Trump

Woods, a golf superstar with 15 major titles, had passed a negative alcohol test but refused to submit to a urine test, and was in possession of painkillers when he was arrested. He was released eight hours later. Involved in several road accidents in recent years, he announced on Tuesday “withdrawal” from golf in order to “follow treatment”.

It is unclear from the video which “president” Woods is referring to. The golfer rubs shoulders with Donald Trump, who himself recalled on Friday that the star of the greens was a “very close friend”. The former world number 1 has not competed since July 2024. A year ago, he had surgery for a ruptured left Achilles tendon, casting a shadow over the rest of his career, marred by injuries and operations.
