Strasbourg goes into quarters, Lille stumbles on Aston Villa and stops there

In a crazy Meinau stadium, RC Strasbourg validated its qualification for the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League by conceding a draw against Rijeka (1-1), after its first leg victory (2-1). Quickly put in difficulty by the opening score of Toni Fruk (21st), the Alsatians struggled for a long time to realize their numerous opportunities, despite the activity of their wingers and several attempts rejected by goalkeeper Martin Zlomislic. Still undefeated in the competition, Gary O’Neil’s players went through a more complicated encounter than expected.

The equalizer came from Valentin Barco in the 71st minute, well served by Sebastian Nanasi, who had come on shortly before. Strasbourg will face German club Mainz in April for a place in the semi-finals, in a quasi-regional duel. This qualification contrasts with a more irregular dynamic in the championship, where the Racing Club de Strasbourg only occupies eighth place with 37 points.

Faced with Aston Villa, Lille stalls in the Europa League

For its part, Lille was eliminated from the Europa League after a 2-0 defeat on the lawn of Aston Villa, confirming the setback of the first leg (1-0). The northern club joins OL who are also out of the competition. Too timid for a long time, Bruno Genesio’s players only really reacted after the break, without managing to reverse the trend.

Emiliano Martinez was decisive by launching the action of the first goal concluded by John McGinn (54th), before Leon Bailey, served by Ollie Watkins, sealed the fate of the match at the end of the match (86th), illustrating the superiority and depth of the English squad.

With a defensive organization and little offensive ambition in the first period, Losc struggled to exist, despite a few interventions from Berke Ozer. Olivier Giroud thought he would revive his team, but his goal was refused for offside (61st). “I would have liked us to score on one of our highlights. It makes me sad… to concede a goal from their goalkeeper’s clearance,” he reacted on Canal+, before adding: “I think we gave everything. (…) It’s frustrating but we can be proud of ourselves.”
