It’s the pompom… Canada offers its fans of Italian origin to exchange their jerseys

What if that wasn’t the humiliation too much? Deprived of the last three World Cups, the Italians will experience another terrible summer, where they will have to find a substitute country to support at the World Cup. Canada smelled a good deal. The Canadian Football Federation offered Italian-Canadian supporters in Toronto a small deal this Saturday that could be useful to them.

It involves exchanging your Squadra Azzurra jersey for that of the Kanucks to “support the national team” at the 2026 World Cup. For several hours, fans lined up in front of a café in the “Little Italy” district of Toronto to exchange their blue or white tunics, according to images posted on social networks. They left with Canada’s new red home jersey… but were able to keep that of the Nazionale.

1.5 million inhabitants of Italian origin

“Soccer in Canada has been built by generations of players, supporters and communities, including Italian-Canadians who have helped keep the passion for our sport alive,” said Paulo Senra, communications manager for Canada Soccer.

“We want every Canadian – regardless of their historical allegiances – to join the momentum around our men’s national team, because this time, it’s Canada,” he added, quoted in a Federation press release. Canada has 1.5 million residents of Italian origin, or 4.3% of the population, according to the 2021 census, and more than 80% live in Ontario and Quebec.
