Cristian Munoz, Colombian cyclist, died at age 30 following a fall at the Tour du Jura


A new tragedy has just struck cycling. Six days after suffering a heavy fall during the last Tour du Jura, Colombian rider Cristian Camilo Munoz died this Friday in hospital. The 30-year-old athlete, who was part of the Nu Colombia team, experienced “medical complications”, as indicated by the Colombian Cycling Federation.

“It is with deep sadness and great dismay that the Colombian Cycling Federation and its Executive Committee deplore the death of Cristian Camilo Munoz Lancheros, following medical complications following an accident that occurred on Saturday during the Tour du Jura,” specifies the press release from the Colombian federation.

He participated in major races alongside “Pogi”

It would like to pay tribute to its 30-year-old rider: “His death leaves a huge void in Colombian cycling and in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing him and sharing the road and competitions with him. Cristian will be remembered for his dedication, discipline and character, on and off the bike.”

Cristian Munoz notably distinguished himself by winning a stage of the Giro d’Italia U23 in 2018, before playing between 2019 and 2021 within UAE Team Emirates. He then rubbed shoulders with Tadej Pogacar, notably at the start of famous races like the Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2020.

Nu Colombia withdraws from the Tour of Asturias

In a press release, his current training Nu Colombia, which he joined in 2024, explains that Cristian Munoz was treated on Saturday in a medical center where “he received treatment for an injury to his left knee”. Then upon arrival in Oviedo (Spain), the victim was re-examined in a clinic, where “medical staff diagnosed an infection that was difficult to treat and required specialized care”.

His condition “worsened” on Thursday and Cristian Munoz died this Friday morning. In shock, the Nu Colombia team indicates that it is immediately withdrawing from the Tour of Asturias, in which it participated, and whose arrival is scheduled for Sunday.
