Reestablished by the IOC, femininity tests raise “ethical and scientific questions”

After athletics, boxing and skiing, which launched the “movement”, all Olympic sports will be affected. In view of the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, the International Olympic Committee announced Thursday the reinstatement of femininity tests, which bans transgender athletes and a large number of intersex athletes from women’s sport. A flashback of thirty years.

In a statement sent to AFP, the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) announced that it had “taken note of the clarification provided” by the IOC and underlined that “until now, the volatility of the rules and the significant heterogeneities from one sport to another or sometimes between the national and international levels within the same sport constituted disturbing elements for the federations, affecting the calm preparation of athletes”.

“Practical difficulties arise”

“However,” adds the authority, “the position announced does not make it possible to answer all of the questions,” adds the authority. Even if the CNOSF notes that the IOC policy takes into account certain specific situations, the SRY tests mentioned in fact raise major ethical and scientific questions for all those concerned. »

The committee also considers that “practical difficulties arise, particularly in France, where the carrying out of such tests will come up against the provisions of bioethics laws and the Civil Code, which, to date, prohibit their implementation in laboratories in our country”, referring in particular to the bioethics law of 1994.

The CNOSF highlights the importance of “collective work with public authorities, the Olympic and sports movement and competent experts, in order to progress in a concerted manner on this complex and sensitive subject, while respecting both the fundamental rights of the people concerned and the integrity of the competitions”.
