Genetics, Doping, Posing… Here’s why you should no longer compare your physique and your performances to those of others

Sport is often conducive to comparison, especially in the age of social networks where we are more tempted to judge ourselves in relation to the performance or physique of others. But everything is not all black and white. Yes, it is possible to progress and improve your performance and physique. But not to reach someone else’s. HAS 20 Minutessports coach Charly Aourir explains the different factors that influence progression and helps us understand why some evolve faster than others…

With equal training in the same sport, we will not all have the same results

“I don’t want to work my upper body too much because I pick it up quickly. » Have you ever heard this phrase? Even if it needs to be qualified, it is true that some people can gain much more muscle mass than others. Sports coach Charly Aourir recognizes this: “A member of my gym obtained my physique in just six months of bodybuilding. »

Muscular inequality, among other things, exists, and that’s why buying the glute or bicep program from your favorite fitness influencer will never guarantee you have the same body. Sport, as a whole, can sometimes seem unrewarding, it must be admitted!

That being said, “it is not inevitable either”, reassures the author of the book “Unrecognizable in Sixty Days”. Without a program or a suitable diet, most amateur practitioners are really “far from exploiting their full potential”. With discipline and work, you can get very close to your ideal performance or physique. Although, as you have understood, it’s not all willpower and discipline. With equal training, in the same sporting practice, we will not all have the same progress.

Three factors that influence physical results

1. Genetic predisposition. This is point number 1 which will determine your own ceiling. Among the factors cited by the coach: gender (man or woman), size, which influences the length of the limbs and segments, the number of muscle fibers (slow or fast), which influences the strength or endurance potential. Biomechanical levers and muscular insertions, which impact the structure of the body after mass gain, hormonal expression, such as androgen sensitivity and the level of testosterone, myostatin, muscle growth factor. Or even hormonal expression, with androgen sensitivity, for example.

2. Chemistry. Some amateurs or professionals can use doping products (sometimes without realizing it), which boosts their performance and the physical development of an individual.

3. Trompe l’oeil. The art of posing lies in knowing how to highlight your muscles from different angles. A body does not look the same on social networks with light, congestion, and angle. Clothing, like some leggings, can also give the impression of shaping a muscle. And of course, photo editing software is widely used.

So many points to take into account so as not to fall into the comparison trap, in the gym or on the Internet. The best progression is the one that your body allows you to achieve.
