Whoever takes charge of Bournemouth, the task promises to be demanding. Since his arrival in 2023, Iraola has firmly anchored the Cherries in the Premier League, steering the club away from the relegation zone. Last season, under his leadership, the Cherries even briefly toyed with the idea of European qualification, ultimately finishing in ninth place. This year, the Europa League remains within reach: with six rounds remaining, only three points separate the club from sixth place, in an extremely compact mid-table.
On Tuesday, the club formalized the scheduled departure of Iraola, whose contract expires in June. “It’s the right time for me to leave,” explained the 43-year-old Spaniard, announced on the bench of Athletic Bilbao, where he played for a long time.
During one of his last matches at the head of the Cherries, the Spaniard also achieved a masterstroke last Saturday: thanks to goals from Junior Kroupi and Alex Scott, Bournemouth won 2-1 on the lawn of the leader, Arsenal, thus forcing the Gunners to remain under the threat of losing the title.
