The world of football is in mourning. Former Austrian goalkeeper Alex Manninger has died at the age of 48 in a tragic road accident near Salzburg, Austria.

A sudden disappearance which upset several major European clubs, notably Liverpool FC, Arsenal FC and Juventus FC, where he had played during his career.

A dramatic accident near Salzburg

According to the German and Austrian press, the tragedy occurred at an unsecured level crossing. The minibus driven by Alex Manninger was violently hit by a regional train.

The violence of the shock was extreme:

  • the vehicle was dragged several meters
  • the driver was stuck in the wreck

Unfortunately, emergency services were unable to do anything to save the former Austrian international.

A career marked by major European clubs

During his career, Alex Manninger played 33 matches with the Austrian selection and played for several prestigious clubs.

He notably distinguished himself:

  • at Arsenal FC between 1998 and 2002
  • at Juventus FC between 2008 and 2012
  • then to Liverpool FC during the 2016-2017 season

An experienced goalkeeper, he made an impression with his professionalism and longevity at the highest level before retiring in 2017.

Tributes pour in

Very quickly, reactions multiplied in the world of football. Red Bull Salzburg notably published a poignant message:

“We mourn our former goalkeeper Alexander Manninger, who tragically died in an accident. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in peace. »

A tribute to the image of the emotion aroused by this disappearance.

Without being the most publicized star of his generation, Alex Manninger was recognized for his rigor, his discretion and his commitment.

In each of the clubs he played at, he left the memory of an exemplary player, appreciated by his teammates and supporters alike.

The disappearance of Alex Manninger is a stark reminder of the fragility of life, even for sports figures.

From Arsenal FC to Liverpool FC via Juventus FC, all of European football is in mourning today.
