Former Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Manninger died this Thursday at the age of 48 in a road accident. He had notably played at Arsenal and Juventus.
A road accident cost him his life. Having played for many clubs during his career, including Arsenal and Juventus, Alexander Manninger died this Thursday at the age of 48. The former goalkeeper died on the roads of Nußdorf am Haunsberg, near Salzburg in Austria. His career spanned from 1995 to 2017.
According to the local press, Alexander Manninger’s vehicle was hit by a train at a level crossing. Emergency services extracted the former doorman from the debris but were unable to resuscitate him. “Alexander Manninger was an exceptional ambassador for Austrian football, on and off the field,” responded the Austrian Federation in a press release. “His international career was a benchmark and inspired many young goalkeepers. His professionalism, composure and reliability made him an essential part of his teams and the national team.”
Having turned professional at Austria Salzburg, the ancestor of RB Salzburg, Alexander Manninger left for Arsenal in 1997. During his time in England, he wore the Gunners jersey 64 times, until 2002. In his role as David Seaman’s understudy, he notably won the 1998 Premier League and the FA Cup the same year.
The rest of his career mainly took place in Italy, culminating in a move to Juventus between 2008 and 2012. Also the opportunity to win the Serie A title in 2012. Alongside his arrival in Turin, he played in Euro 2008 with his selection. However, he had not played.
